Wystan Hugh Auden y Juan Rodolfo Wilcock: En memoria de W. B. Yeats

IN MEMORY OF W. B. YEATS

III

Earth, receive an honoured guest;
William Yeats is laid to rest:
Let the Irish vessel lie
Emptied of its poetry.

Time that is intolerant
Of the brave and innocent,
And indifferent in a week
To a beautiful physique,

Worships language and forgives
Everyone by whom it lives;
Pardons cowardice, conceit,
Lay its honours at their feet.

Time that with this strange excuse
Pardoned Kipling and his views,
And will pardon Paul Claudel,
Pardons him for writing well.

In the nightmare of the dark
All the dogs of Europe bark,
And the living nations wait,
Each sequestered in its hate;

Intellectual disgrace
Stares from every human face,
And the seas of pity lie
Locked and frozen in each eye.

Follow, poet, follow right
To the bottom of the night,
With your unconstraining voice
Still persuade us to rejoice;

With the farming of a verse
Make a vineyard of the curse,
Sing of human unsuccess
In a rapture of distress;

In the deserts of the heart
Let the healing fountain start,
In the prison of his days
Teach the free man how to praise.

EN MEMORIA DE W. B. YEATS

III

Recibe, tierra, a un huésped honorable;
William Yeats desciende hacia el reposo.
Que el ánfora irlandesa
descanse, despojada de su música.

El tiempo que es intolerante
con el audaz y el inocente,
y en sólo una semana indiferente
ante un hermoso físico,

adora los idiomas y perdona
a quienes les dan vida;
perdona vanidades, cobardías,
y pone sus honores a sus pies.

El tiempo que con esta extraña excusa
perdonó a Kipling sus ideas,
y habrá de perdonar a Paul Claudel,
perdona a los que escriben bien.

En esta pesadilla de la sombra
todos los perros de Europa ladran,
y las naciones vivientes acechan,
secuestradas en sus odios;

la vergüenza intelectual
nos mira desde cada rostro humano
y los mares de la piedad
se hielan en todos los ojos.

Sigue, poeta, sigue derecho
hacia el fondo de la noche,
con tu voz que nunca ordena
persuádenos aún la alegría.

Con el cultivo de un verso
haz la viña de las anatemas,
canta el fracaso humano
en un éxtasis de angustia.

En los desiertos del corazón
deja fluir la fuente consoladora,
en la prisión de sus días
enseña al hombre libre los elogios.
